MARBELLAND

2020-2021

This 200+ frame series was inspired by one of my favorite books, Autonauts of the Cosmoroute by Carol Dunlop and Julio Cortázar. The book tells the biographical story of the couple’s journey from Paris to Marseille - a five-hour drive that stretched into over a month, as they paused at every rest stop, transforming their van into a time-travel capsule filled with fantastical tales. It was an exercise in seeing beyond, in seeking meaning and wonder within the mundane and repetitive.

Marbelland became my own visual journey through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an anthropological chronicle of a historic moment in time when I found myself literally stranded within a 12-kilometer radius for nearly two years, in a sun-drenched resort town. Under tight lockdowns, Marbella- a once vibrant Andalusian destination- transformed before my eyes. I witnessed its stillness, the return of abundant wildlife, the silence, the solitude, the fear, and the surreal beauty that emerged. These glimpses, captured on camera, have now faded as normalcy returns and crowds of visitors reclaim

the space.

The captions take the form of Blakean-inspired diary entries: cryptic, tongue-in-cheek reflections full of playful alliteration and homophonic wordplay. They echo the spirit of that time: uncertain and surreal, childlike and ominous, magical yet haunting.
