Throughout the whirlpool of events the world was plunged into following the emergence of COVID-19, no word proved more omnipresent than *waves*. It described both the terrifying and the transformative: the tsunami of misinformation; the rising waves of casualties, tracked daily through shifting line charts; but also the wave of scientific breakthroughs and the swelling voices demanding justice and equity.

 

The WAVES series was photographed in Spain in 2021, during a year of navigating the pandemic with no clear end in sight. After a deadly winter wave, the country witnessed the arrival of a calmer tide and renewed hope through medical advancements. At the same time, I observed the sea echo this collective rhythm: slowly ushering dead seaweed to shore, welcoming glistening clear horizons, just after the bleak wave break.

 

Life, as we’ve learned, comes in waves.
